Hello everyone, Nimen Hao,
I hope the new school year has started off very well for you. I know that all of you are very busy but I hope you will help me. As I have been working on curriculum, lesson plans and teaching methodology in the Chinese classroom I would like you to respond to the following hypothetical situation.
The situation concerns two foreign language classrooms in a high school, ninth through 12th grade; one classroom is a Spanish language classroom the other is a Chinese langu…

Hello everyone,
I hope and pray that your summer is going well.
I am writing this blog to ask for your help; one of the summer projects I was asked to do, was to develop a course expectations for Chinese 1, 2 and 3. What is the knowledge and skills we want students to have after one year of Chinese 1, Chinese 2 and Chinese 3. If any of you have documents, drafts or thoughts in this, please share with me. Thanks.
The following is the format for this course expectations/course checklist:
Standard…

Hello everyone,
I know you all must be really getting tired in hearing from me. Please stay with me, the blogging will slow and probably even stop. If is summer break and I am looking back on the past school and preparing for the next year.
I would like your feedback, thoughts and experiences in mentoring. It has been a couple of years since I mentor a teacher and this coming school year will be mentoring 2 new Chinese teachers for our school district. I want to do it right and would like your i…

Perhaps the ACTFL and Foreign service proficiency goals are not appropriate for school students. Learning a language is intimately connected with identity and meaning for young people. Its about building a sound pre-proficiency basis and this means alot of investigation, reflection, comparison and above all a rich and supportive learning environment (no more rigorous Friday afternoon character memory tests...) Its about learning to make sense of Chinese starting with what they know about their f…

Hi everyone,
As I continue to reflect on my past year of teaching, many things come to mind. I have just discovered some great material on wikispaces which I am going through. I have been looking for teaching strategies, a classroom demo and teaching methodology on the teaching and learning of the Chinese tones. At this time, I only find your links, web sites, videos and audios on your wikispaces. I am sure you agree that it is quite a big jump for American students to start learning Chinese, fi…

I hope you will let me continue to write to all of you about thoughts, concerns and issues, so I may learn from all of you.
This past school year, I tried to advocate for Chinese language with my school district foreign language colleagues. During the year, we meet all together for inservices and usually, teachers share teaching methods, classroom strategies and curriculum. All of these inservices were based around Spanish, French and German. I talked with our World Language district leader to h…

Hello everyone,
The school year is about finished and I hope you all have had a great year. At the end of a school year, I like to take time to look back, reflect on my teaching year. It has been a super year, yet feel so much could have been done better and many things should be changed. During this past year, I have tried to put into practice all what I learned from colleagues, in-services, meetings, conferences and workshops. In the following, I have some concerns and issues I feel I need you…

Please take a minute to take my one question poll on student preferred tool for messaging. I'm especially interested in reaching those who work with language students. Sorry for any cross-posting.

Thanks for your help. I know this is very unscientific.

大家你们好!
I am doing an informal research on the number of students taking Chinese and would like it if you would tell me about how many students take: Chinese 1, Chinese 2, Chinese 3 and Chinese 4 in senior and high schools. Also, about how many of these students continue to study Chinese in college or university.
Thanks so much for taking a few minutes to send me the information.

Hi everyone,
Sorry that it has been so long in writing on my blog and site. It has really been very busy with my Chinese teaching.
This past week, I got word from my school district that they have approved for an additional Chinese teacher in the district. Now, comes the fun; trying to find a native Chinese language teacher. If you are or know of an interested Chinese teacher, please let me know. I would love to talk with him/her.
I pray and hope I will hear from someone and please pass on this…

Hi,
I hope you can help me. I have a student who wants to get a Chinese tattoo, which reads or means “Never forget” His mother past away and wants a tattoo to remember her by. I am not into tattoos, but am afraid this student will get something that really does not mean what he wants it to be. Also, if anyone has a Chinese phrase that would work, please let me know.
Thanks.

The openning ceremony was so very beautiful and very impressive. I feel a great pride for China and the Chinese people. It is a great event and time for the country of China.
How are you as Chinese teachers going to use these Olympics in your classes? What are you saying and including in any lesson plan on the Olympics?
Thank you for sharing any lessons, ideas and thoughts.

This weekend, I caught up on a couple of movies presently playing. One was the popular “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” and the other was “Mongol". It was interesting to hear some Chinese in both movies. Perhaps this a sign of a growing interest in things that are Chinese. “The Mummy” had nothing that was historically true in it; made references to the first emperor of China, his tomb and terra cotta soldiers. It was a fun and exciting film to watch. However, on the other side, the movie…
